Supporting Success: How ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳’s Peer Tutoring Program is Making a Difference
Written By: Brandy Mitchell, Dean of Academics, ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳
At ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ (ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳), student success is built on a foundation of support, leadership, and collaboration. One program leading the way is our Peer Tutoring Program, a key initiative in the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
Launched with five Trojan Scholars tutors, the program has grown to include nine tutors who provide academic assistance for over 30 courses. Sessions are available both in-person at the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and online through TEAMS, ensuring students have flexible and consistent access to support.
Building Leaders and Academic Skills
The Peer Tutoring Program strengthens academic success while developing leaders on campus. Tutors complete professional training through the Knack Peer Tutoring Program, following standards set by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Their preparation includes professional ethics, communication strategies, and tools to teach effective study habits like time management and goal setting.
This process ensures tutors are well-equipped to help their peers understand challenging material and build skills for success. At the same time, the program gives tutors valuable leadership experience and a deeper mastery of their subjects.
Proven Impact
The feedback from students highlights the program’s success. Recent surveys show:
1. 100% of students found tutors knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging.
2. Every student surveyed plans to use the program again and would recommend it to others.
These results show how effective peer tutoring can be in creating a positive and supportive academic environment.
A Simple and Accessible Program
The program’s accessibility makes it easy for students to find the help they need. By scanning a QR code, students can access a Bookings page to check tutor availability, schedule sessions, and receive automatic reminders, including TEAMS links for virtual tutoring.
This user-friendly system eliminates barriers and ensures every student can benefit from the program.
Strengthening Campus Connections
Peer tutoring creates meaningful connections between students. Tutors act as role models, providing encouragement and academic guidance that helps their peers stay on track. These interactions build confidence and strengthen the sense of community at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳.
The program’s growth reflects its impact. The number of tutors has nearly doubled, and coverage has expanded to include 18 additional courses. This growth demonstrates the trust students have in the program and its value to the campus community.
Looking Ahead
The Peer Tutoring Program continues to grow as part of ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳’s vision for student success. We will expand the program by adding more tutors, increasing subject coverage, and ensuring every student has access to high-quality academic support.
The program represents what ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ is all about: helping students succeed, preparing leaders, and fostering an environment where every individual can achieve their goals.
